Gigabytes to kilobytes

Multiply gigabytes by 1,000,000 to get kilobytes.

10 GB = 10,000,000 kB

How to convert gigabytes to kilobytes

The kilobyte is one thousand bytes (10³ B) in the decimal (SI) convention. The gigabyte is one billion bytes (10⁹ B) in the decimal convention.

Worked example — 10 GB: 10 × 1,000,000 = 10,000,000 kB.

About gigabytes and kilobytes

Gigabyte (GB)

1 GB = 1,000,000 kB

Definition. One billion bytes (10⁹ B) in the decimal convention

History and origin

The gigabyte uses the metric giga prefix for a billion bytes. Drive makers label capacity in decimal gigabytes, while operating systems often report the binary gibibyte, which is why sizes seem to disagree.

Current use

Gigabytes measure phone storage, memory and mobile data plans.

Kilobyte (kB)

1 kB = 0.000001 GB

Definition. One thousand bytes (10³ B) in the decimal (SI) convention

History and origin

The kilobyte took the metric kilo prefix for a thousand, but in computing it was often used loosely for 1024 bytes. The IEC later defined the kibibyte for the binary value to remove the ambiguity.

Current use

Kilobytes measure small files and text documents; in strict decimal use a kilobyte is exactly one thousand bytes.

Where people use this

Gigabytes: phone storage, mobile data plans. Kilobytes: small files, documents. 1 GB is 1 000 000 kB (decimal).

How we know this is right
The factor is fixed by the standards that define the units, not chosen — so it is exact, not a measurement:
1 kB = 0.000001 GB, so 1 GB = 1 ÷ 0.000001 = 1,000,000 kB.

Every value is carried to full double precision; the display is rounded.

Both units are defined in IEC 80000-13 (quantities and units — information science); NIST on binary prefixes.
