To convert steps to miles, multiply your step count by your step length and divide by the length of a mile. Step length is estimated from your height — about 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men — so a walked mile is roughly 2,000 to 2,500 steps depending on stature, and 10,000 steps is about 4 to 5 miles.

How it works
Your distance depends on your step length, and step length scales with height. Taller people cover more ground per step, so they take fewer steps per mile. The step length is estimated as height × 0.413 for women and height × 0.415 for men. Step length is about 41–45% of height (Scientific American); the sex-specific 0.413/0.415 split is from Inch Calculator's reviewed method. Distance is then steps × step length, and one mile is 1,609.344 metres (63,360 inches). The population walking average is about 2,200 steps per mile (Hoeger et al., 2008), which this height model reproduces at around 5 ft 10 in stature — shorter walkers take more steps per mile.
Worked example
For a woman 168 cm tall (about 5 ft 6 in) who has taken 10,000 steps: step length = 1.68 × 0.413 = 0.694 m, so steps per mile = 1,609.344 ÷ 0.694 = 2,319, and distance = 10,000 ÷ 2,319 = 4.31 miles (6.94 km). A taller 5 ft 10 in man covers the same 10,000 steps in about 4.58 miles, because his longer step means fewer steps per mile (about 2,181).
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
- Walking a mile takes about 2,200 steps on average, but the exact number depends on your height. Using step length = height × 0.413 (women), a 5 ft 0 in woman takes roughly 2,560 steps per mile, while a 6 ft 6 in woman takes about 1,970 — because a longer step covers a mile in fewer steps.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
- For most people, 10,000 steps is between 4 and 5 miles of walking — about 4.3 miles for someone 5 ft 6 in and about 4.6 miles for someone 5 ft 10 in. Enter your height above for your own figure.
Does height change the result?
- Yes. Step length is estimated as a fixed fraction of height, so a taller person covers more distance in the same number of steps. This is why a general "2,000 steps per mile" rule under- or over-states the distance for very short or very tall walkers.
Does walking or running change steps per mile?
- Running increases your step length, so a mile of running takes fewer steps than a mile of walking — roughly 1,000–1,500 steps per mile at a run (a 6-to-8-minute mile, per Hoeger 2008) versus about 2,200 walking; a jog (10–12 min/mile) sits between. This calculator uses walking step length; measure your own stride for the most accurate figure.
How is step length different from stride length?
- A step is one foot forward (heel to heel of the opposite foot); a stride is two steps — a full gait cycle from one foot to the same foot again. Steps-per-mile figures here use step length, so your stride length is about twice your step length.
Does my walking pace change the distance?
- Not in this estimate. Distance is your step count times your step length, so for a fixed number of steps the miles do not depend on how fast you walk. In practice a brisker pace lengthens your stride a little, adding a small amount of distance per step — measure your own stride if you want to account for it.
How do I measure my own step length?
- Walk a known distance — 10 metres, say — at your normal pace and count your steps, then divide the distance by the step count. That gives a step length specific to you, which is more accurate than the height-based estimate this calculator uses.
